History
The tournament was first held in 1955, and is the second only to the U.S. Women's Open as the longest running event in LPGA History. Beverly Hanson won the inaugural title in a 36-hole playoff, 4 and 3, over Louise Suggs at the Orchard Ridge CC in Ft. Wayne, Indiana. From 1987 through 1993, Mazda was the title sponsor, and McDonald's has held the name since 1994. To date, this single sporting event has raised a record-breaking $41.6 million for RMHC-funds that reach around the world to help lift children to a better tomorrow.
By any measure, this tournament is intense and exciting. With prize money of $1.8 million, the McDonald's LPGA Championship Presented By Coca-Cola one of only four "majors" on the LPGA Tour and has become one of the most respected tournaments in all of golf. In fact, 19 of the past 41 winners are members of the LPGA Hall of Fame.
