History
The tournament was first held in 1976, but only became an LPGA major championship in 2001. Se Ri Pak won the inaugural Open held as a major at the famed Turnberry Golf Course. The 138-player field is made up of a roster of top international players, including the top 70 players on the LPGA Tour, the top 15 players from the previous year's event, and players from the LET and Japanese LPGA tours. The tournament rotates among the top courses in Britian, in a similar fashion to the men's British Open event.
